Turner Lake Cleanup and Dive Against Debris

Turner Lake Cleanup and Dive Against Debris

Turner Lake Cleanup and Dive Against Debris

Salem Scuba is hosting its second, annual cleanup of Turner Lake, on September 14, 2024.  We will be getting together Saturday, September 14th at 9AM to complete a Dive Against Debris survey and then work on getting the underwater, park side of the lake cleaned up. If you have the time, please consider joining us in our efforts to help keep Turner Lake clean and enjoyable for all of us to continue to use! (During this Salem Scuba event, you can plan on about an hour of diving.)

For those of you who haven’t dove in Turner Lake before, it is a retired rock quarry – turned lake. As such, the bottom is very loose and can be silted up quite easily. Around the edges, there is a lot of grass and, true to (quarry) form, there is a decent thermocline at around 18 – 20 feet. The deepest areas (holes) in the lake bottom, go down to about 65 feet.

If you’re interested in completing the Dive Against Debris specialty, with the focus of helping keep our oceans and lakes clean (while collecting needed information to help drive changes that will protect our marine life and aquatic environments, fresh or saltwater), this will be a great event to attend!

Additionally, for those of you who are working on attaining your Master Scuba Diver and/or Divemaster certifications, this event is a great option to complete some of your needed specialties.

Specialties we can work on during this Tuner Lake event:

  • Dive Against Debris
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy
  • Drysuit

Specialty Certification Costs:

  • Dive Against Debris: $225 (excludes rental gear)
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy: $300 (excludes rental gear)

Please note, if you just want to come dive with our Salem Scuba group and help with the Turner Lake cleanup, you are more than welcome to join. While we are providing opportunities to work on / complete specialties, they are not a requirement to dive with us on the 14th!
